Rudolf Piehlmayer, born in Straubing, studied piano, clarinet and conducting at the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich. In 1986 he was a grant winner of the CM v. Weber Competition, as well as the Felix Mottl Competition in Munich, 1987 winner of the "International Weber Competition" for clarinet in Warsaw. After a scholarship in the orchestra seminar of the Deutsche Oper Berlin he was solo clarinettist of the Berliner Symphoniker. During this time he studied conducting with Prof. Hermann Michael and graduated with honors. As part of the college, he participated in masterclasses with Leonard Bernstein and Sergiu Celibidache.
In 1991 he was engaged as a solo repercussionist at THEATER REGENSBURG, where he made his opera debut with Humperdinck's "Hänsel und Gretel" . Soon after, he was appointed First Kapellmeister and subsequently Deputy General Music Director. In the season 2001/02 he was 1.Dirigent at the Theater St.Gallen / Switzerland.
In 1994 he was awarded the Bavarian State Prize.
From 2002 to 2009 Rudolf Piehlmayer was Music Director of the City of Augsburg and conductor of the symphonic concerts of the Augsburg Philharmonic. Due to the short-term takeover of the premiere of Gisbert Nether's "The Little Prince" with Mario Adorf and the orchestra of the GERMAN OPERA BERLIN, he was invited there to other guest conductors. He directed Orff's Carmina Burana , Mozart's Magic Flute , Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice, and Wagner's The Flying Dutchman .
With the resumption of Richard Strauss' "Der Rosenkavalier" he made his debut in January 2002 with the GEWANDHAUSORCHESTER at the OPER LEIPZIG.
In March 2004 he also conducted Bruckner's 8th Symphony in a choreography by Uwe Scholz with the GEWANDHAUSORCHESTER. He also conducted several ballet evenings in 2006 with Mozart's Jeunhomme Concerto, the 2nd Symphony by Robert Schumann and others
As part of the SALZBURG KULTURTAGE 2004, he conducted Strauss' "Salome" in the FESTSPIELHAUS SALZBURG with the MOZARTEUM ORCHESTER SALZBURG.
In July 2005, Rudolf Piehlmayer conducted the highly acclaimed Augsburg premiere of Gustav Mahler's 8th Symphony with the AUGSBURG PHILHARMONIKERN on the occasion of the 450th anniversary of the Augsburg Religious Peace. For this performance, he was awarded the Special Prize of the Augsburg Theater Prize 2005.
At the HERRENCHIEMSEE FESTSPIELEN in August 2005 he was invited to conduct the SINFONIA VARSOVIA with works by Strauss, Wagner and Berlioz .
From 2007 to 2010 he worked as the 1st permanent guest conductor at the OPER LEIPZIG / Gewandhaus Orchestra and conducted over 80 performances at this house during this time. Ua Puccini's "Manon Lescaut," Verdi "Traviata", Mozart's "Magic Flute," Tchaikovsky "Nutcracker" Adam "Giselle", Orff's "Carmina Burana" , as well as ballets by Uwe Scholz with Bruckner's 8th Symphony and Schumann second .
In June 2010, NEOS released the world premiere of David Philip Hefti's "Concerto for Oboe and Orchestra" in a recording with Thomas Indermühle and the Augsburg Philharmonic.
With the BAMBERGER SYMPHONIKERN / Bayerische Staatsphilharmonie in January 2008 he produced Max Reger's "Mozart Variations" and Meinrad Schmitt's "Im Zeichen der Venus" for Bayerischer Rundfunk.
In addition, several CD recordings have appeared with the AUGSBURG PHILHARMONIKERN, including a CD for children with Meinrad Schmitts' "Crespino and King Tulipan" and Maurice Ravel's "Ma mère l'oye" (Cavalli Records LC 05724). In 2007 EMI released "Fantasia Italiana" , a debut recording of virtuoso opera paraphrases for oboe and orchestra by Antonio Pasculli with Christoph Hartmann as soloist and the AUGSBURG PHILHARMONIKERN (EMI 0946 3 79944 2 9).
He directed the premiere of Massenet's "Werther" at the Theater Magdeburg in January 2011. He opened the season 2011/12 with the premiere of Mozart's Magic Flute at the NORSKE OPERA / NATIONALOPER in Oslo .
Since 2013, Rudolf Piehlmayer has been working at international music academies such as the NORWEGIAN ACADEMY of MUSIC OSLO and as a guest conductor since July 2014 at the MUSASHINO ACADEMIA MUSICAE TOKYO / Japan.
He has been working closely with the Orchester Symphonique de Bretagne in Rennes since 2014. In 2015 he took over the musical direction of Wagner's "Lohengrin" at the OPÉRA de RENNES (Orchester Symphonique de Bretagne) and at the OPÈRA ROUEN Haut-Normandie. In the season 2016/17 he took over there a series of symphony concerts.
For the 2017/18 season, there were Bellini's NORMA and for 2018/19 Richard Wagner's "THE FLYING DUTCHLER" on his calendar.
With the Orchester de l'Opéra Rouen (OOR) he briefly took over a symphony concert in February 2019 with Dvorak's Cello Concerto and Brahms's Symphony No. 3.
For 2020 he is responsible for Puccini's Madame Butterfly at the Opéra Graslin Nantes with the local opera orchestra. Other performances again at the Opéra de Rennes and the Grand Théatre Angers.
