Alize Francheska coloratura soprano and actor “displaying profound imagination and control” (Philadelphia Inquirer), is a recent graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, and is quickly garnering attention for her vibrant and flexible soprano voice, and commanding stage presence and expressivity in a variety of repertoire.

 

In the 2018-2019 season, Alize makes her role and company debut as Zina in Nico Muhly's Dark Sisters with Opera Fayetteville, Nicole in Jason Cady's modulated synth-accompanied Candy Corn with Experiments in Opera at the Flea Theatre in NYC, triumphs as Phyllis in Iolanthe with Philadelphia's historic Savoy Company, performing at the Suzanne Roberts Theatre, Longwood Gardens, plays Anne Egerman in Sondheim's A Little Night Music with ActorsNET, performs as soprano soloist in Duke Ellington's Sacred Concert, a fusion of opera and jazz with full orchestra, which kicks off the 2018 DuPont Clifford Brown Jazz Festival, plays Lucia in Benjamin Britten's The Rape of Lucretia with Montclair Opera Theatre, and is resident for 3 weeks teaching and performing in Hồ Chí Minh City, Vietnam with SOUL Academy before heading to Harrogate, England, to reprise the role of Phyllis in Iolanthe at the 25th International Gilbert & Sullivan Festival, receiving honor in the "Best Female Voice" category, and performs the role of Heather in the world premiere of her very first opera libretto, Phony, with music by David Brown, as well as Lisa in her original modernized adaptation and instrumentation of J.S.Bach's Coffee Cantata, presented by House Music Philadelphia.

Ms. Francheska recently performed at Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center in the repertoire of Luciano Berio and Arnold Schonberg, respectively, a live-streamed, staged performance of Arnold Schonberg's Pierrot Lunaire in her original English translation with the Curtis Institute of Music's 20/21 Ensemble and Duende at the Kimmel Center, Unsuk Chin's Akrostichon-Wortspiel during her residency at Curtis, was the Sorel Organization's New Music Fellow at SongFest in a commissioned world premiere piece, Love's Call, by Shulamit Ran, and performed Cage's Aria to rave reviews with Philadelphia's new music ensemble, Arcana. 

 

Other recent stage appearances include Soprano Soloist in Carl Orff's Carmina Burana with the Cape Cod Symphony, Mabel in The Pirates of Penzance at the 23rd International Gilbert & Sullivan Festival in Harrogate, England -- a role she also performed at the Suzanne Roberts Theatre in Philadelphia, and Longwood Gardens with Savoy Company, Soprano Soloist in Scott Ordway's premiere, Tonight We Tell The Secrets of The World. Alize covered the title role in the world premiere of Jane Eyre by Louis Karchin, with the Center for Contemporary Opera, and appeared as La Fée in Massenet's Cendrillon, and Königin der Nacht in Die Zauberflöte at the Trentino Music festival. and in Seattle Symphony's Untitled 3 series as Andy #1 in excerpts of Andy: A Popera, after being part of its creation with the Bearded Ladies Cabaret and Opera Philadelphia, premiered in Philly in 2015.

 

An avid interpreter of early works, Alize was a frequent performer with the Curtis Collegium under the guidance of organist and conductor Matthew Glandorf, and she recently sang Joseph Bruhn's explosive cantata, "Jauchzet dem Herren alle Welt", Barbara Strozzi's "Lagrime mie", Louis-Nicolas Clérambault's Orphée, and Gesualdo's Madrigali, to name a few. She has performed with Amherst Early Music Festival Opera, Queens Baroque Opera Workshop, and mentored under the guidance of Julianne Baird.

 

Immensely passionate about the development of new works, Ms. Francheska was excited to workshop the role of Lila in Cold Mountain by Jennifer Higdon, Silvana in A Flourish of Green by Missy Mazzoli, and the Mother in Errolyn Wallen's Sabina Spielrein with the Center for Contemporary Opera, and workshop the role of Prince Neem, the half-boy in Heath Allen's brand new children's opera, The Half-Boy, Additionally, while at Curtis, she formed a trio with Flutist, Emma Resmini, and Harpist, Héloïse Carlean-Jones to tackle Joseph Schwantner's Wild Angels of the Open Hills and George Crumb's Federico's Little Songs for Children.

On the concert stage, Ms. Francheska has also performed with Grammy Award-Winning ensemble, eighth blackbird, in Lonely Motel: Music from Slide with composer Steve Mackey on electric guitar, and was heralded for her interpretations of Berio's Sequenza III, most notably in a self-staged performance as part of an installation-style show containing all 14 of Berio's 14 Sequenzas, performed somewhat simultaneously, with the Philadelphia Fringe Festival.

 

Her operatic performances range from the early to the contemporary, and include the roles of Blanche de la Force in Poulenc’s Dialogues des Carmélites and Hilda Mack in Henze's Elegy for Young Lovers in Opera Philadelphia and Curtis collaboratives, Cleopatra in Handel's Giulio Cesare at the Trentino Music Festival in Italy, Delia and cover for Contessa di Folleville in Il Viaggio a Reims with the Rossini Festival in Pesaro, and Ilia in Idomeneo, Adina in Donizetti’s L’Elisir d’Amore, Königin der Nacht in Die Zauberflöte, Almirena in Handel’s Rinaldo, Giula in Rossini's La Scala di Seta, Nella in Gianni Schicchi, and Thérèse in Les mamelles de Tirésias, with Curtis Opera Theatre.

 

Ms. Francheska's appearances include those with Chautauqua Opera Company, Opera Philadelphia, The Princeton Symphony, Cape Cod Symphony, Cabrillo Chamber Orchestra, Brentwood-Westwood Symphony, San Diego Opera, San Diego Lyric Opera, Rossini Opera Festival of Pesaro, Italy, Den Nye Opera in Bergen, Norway. 

Ms. Francheska was a 2017 Career Bridges Finalist, and is a three-time winner of the prizes from Musical Merit Foundation of San Diego, recipient of the prestigious Kate Neal Kinley Memorial Fellowship, and received honors from the Palm Beach Opera Competition, Shirley Rabb Winston Scholarship, Bel Canto Vocal Scholarship of Rhode Island, the Grand Concours de Chant, the Lois Alba Aria Competition, Violetta DuPont Competition at Opera Florham, Early Music America, Carmel Music Society, the Professional Opera Singers Association Awards, California Music Teacher’s Association VOCE Awards, Bev Sellers Memorial Scholarship, National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts, and was a semi-finalist in the Kurt Weill Lotte Lenya Competition as well as the American Traditions Competition. 

 

Alize has performed regularly as an improvisational actor in the long-form troupe, Awkward Silence Comedy, was a member of The Fancy Balloons band on vocals, keys, guitar and bass guitar, and has trained in figure skating, gymnastics, dance, and diving. Alize is the daughter of the late Hungarian conductor, Zoltán Rozsnyai, and violinist and conductor, Alyze Dreiling.
