Matthias Manasi is one of today’s most sought-after guest conductors and a prominent figure of the German conductor scene. His versatility and broad repertoire have taken him to symphony and chamber orchestras, contemporary music ensembles and opera houses around the world. 2018/19 marks Manasi’s third season as Music Director of the Nickel City Opera in Buffalo, NY, USA. After completing his studies, Manasi took on the classical German kapellmeister career of an opera conductor in Germany.

 

After positions at the Kiel Opera, Staatstheater Oldenburg, Staatstheater Kassel, Staatstheater Braunschweig and Oper Leipzig, he was chief conductor and artistic director of the Orchestra Camerata Italiana in Naples, from 2010 to 2013, and conductor at the Breslau State Opera, from 2013 to 2016, where he was responsible for opera productions, such as Tschaikovsky’s Eugen Onegin, Verdi’s Falstaff, La Traviata, Giovanna d”Arco, Macbeth, Rigoletto and Nabucco, Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor and L’elisir d’amore, R. Strauss’ Die Frau ohne Schatten and Rosenkavalier, Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia, Penderecki’s Paradise Lost, Moniuszko’s Straszny Dwór and Halka, Mascagni’s Cavalleria rusticana, Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci, Saint-Saëns’ Samson et Dalila, Puccini’s La Bohème, Wagner’s Parsifal and Der Fliegende Holländer, Eötvös’ Angels in America, Szymanowksi’s Król Roger, Orefice’s Chopin, and Bizet’s Carmen and Les pêcheurs de perles.

 

His opera repertoire now includes more than 100 musical theatre works, including numerous 20th-century operas, such as Penderecki’s Paradise Lost, Eötvös’ Angels in America, Shchedrin’s Anna Karenina, Langer’s Figaro gets a divorce (2016) and Marc Aurel Floros’ A Bad Man’s Life (2018). Between 2010 and 2013, the Orchestra Camerata Italiana achieved under Manasi outstanding quality with live recordings on Italian television, with numerous works from baroque to some world premieres. In 2017 he conducted the concert for the worldwide broadcast of the national Romanian event, ”The death of Romanian King Mihai”, with the National Radio Orchestra of Romania in Bucharest.

 

Highlights of the season 2018/19 are opera productions of Verdi’s La Traviata at the Nickel City Opera Buffalo and Boito’s Mefistofele at the Opera Craiova. In addition to these appointments, Manasi maintains a major international presence, making guest appearances at the Opera on the James in Lynchburg (USA) and with orchestras including the Orquestra Sinfonica do Rio Grande do Norte in Natal (Brazil) and Southern Arizona Symphony Orchestra in Tucson (USA). Manasi has previously worked with the Munich Radio Orchestra, Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra, Bach Collegium Stuttgart, Staatsorchester Hannover, Staatsorchester Oldenburg, Staatsorchester Braunschweig, Hamburger Symphoniker, Nürnberger Symphoniker, Baden-Baden Philharmonic, Orchestra Sinfonica di Roma, Orquestra Sinfonica do Teatro Nacional Claudio Santoro, National Radio Orchestra of Romania, Vantaa Symphony Orchestra Helsinki, Orquestra Filarmonia das Beiras Lisbon, Vienna Mozart Orchestra, Berliner Camerata, Liepaja Symphony Orchestra, Bavarian Radio Choir, Kazakh State Symphony Orchestra, Orquestra Sinfônica do Rio Grande do Norte, Orchestra Sinfonica Metropolitana di Bari, Orchestra Sinfonica di Sanremo, Southern Arizona Symphony Orchestra, Cukurova State Symphony Orchestra Adana, Orquestra Filamónica de Montevideo, Sofia Festival Orchestra, Polish Chamber Philharmonic, Györ Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestra Opera Constanta and Southwest German Chamber Orchestra Pforzheim, among others.

 

Past engagements in the field of opera include productions, premieres and performances at the Halle Opera, Leipzig Opera, Bremen Theater, Staatstheater Braunschweig, Staatstheater Stuttgart, Staatstheater Kassel, Oldenburg State Theater, Wroclaw State Opera, International PuntaClassic Festival, Opera Constanta, Teatr Wielki Warsaw (Polish National Opera), Opera Poznan, Kiel Opera, Eutin Festival, Klagenfurt City Theater, Opera Rheinsberg Castle, Silesian State Opera and the Rossini Festival in Bad Wildbad, among others.

In 2010, Matthias Manasi became the Music Director of the well-known International Punta Classic Festival in Montevideo which, under his leadership until 2013, turned into an internationally renowned opera festival, not least because of the high-profile vocal soloists from all over North and South America.

A multi-faceted opera and concert conductor and passionate advocate for new music and film music, Matthias Manasi has always taken on new, modern and innovative paths and formats. He conducts film-in-concert events worldwide (Harry Potter Film Concert Series), and in 2006 accepted an invitation from the Bayerischer Rundfunk for the extraordinary music project ,“Klasse Klassik”, with the Munich Radio Orchestra.

Matthias Manasi has also gained international acclaim as a pianist performing in recitals and chamber music. He often plays piano while conducting.

A former student of the University of Music in Stuttgart, Matthias Manasi studied conducting with Thomas Ungar, piano with Andrzej Ratusiński and composition with Irene Matz. He also studied piano with Carmen Piazzini at the University of Music in Karlsruhe. He studied conducting with Gianluigi Gelmetti, Helmuth Rilling, Jorma Panula and Kurt Masur. During his studies he worked as a répétiteur at the State Opera Stuttgart and was assistant to Manfred Honeck and Heinz Holliger. After his studies he was assistant to Miguel Gómez Martínez.
